Hi readers, How are you all? In today’s article, I’m going to explain the differences between HDD, SSD, and SSHD. If you are going to build a PC or purchasing a laptop then you must aware of the components that you are going to use on your PC. So one of the key components of your computer is stored.

To store our data, some kind of storage is required, whether it is internal storage or external storage. Internal storage is available in our phones and also in our laptops and computers, but talking about external stories. We can increase the storage of our phone by using a micro sd card for our phone. Also, we use external hard disks for external storage.

You must have heard the name of HDD, SSD, and SSHD before or after taking a computer. Although both of them are meant for storage, if you want to build a pc, then you must know about HDD, SSD, and SSHD, what is the difference between them and which one is better and why?

What is SSD?

The full name of SSD is Solid-state drive, Which means there are no moving parts in it. It is also a non-volatile device. This means that Power is not required to save any data stored in it.

Once the data is stored and the power is cut, it will not forget the stored data. There is a technical difference or else both RAM and SSD are Flash memory. But RAM is a volatile memory, while SSD is a non-volatile memory.

Since it does not have any mechanical parts, it is also better than HDD in terms of power consumption. Also, Performance also gives high speed from HDD. The only thing is that its price is much higher than the HDD.

How SSDs work?

This is a Flash memory. Flash memory was invented by Fujio Masuoka while working at the Toshiba company.  As you know, data is not removed even when power is cut in Flash memory.
SSDs have a majority of transistors. It uses NAND based flash memory, which is made up of floating gate transistors. This technique consists of two gates. One Floating gate while another Control gate.

A volt charge control program is applied to the gate to program a single memory cell so that the electrons attach to the control gate at the same time the floating gate traps them. Subsequently, electrons remain in the substrate medium near the floating gate for years. In this way, a cell (one bit) is charged. Later MLC, TLC i.e. multi-level cell devices, Triple-level cell devices were developed which store many bits of information in a cell in seconds.

Advantages of SSD

  • As all the data is saved in the chip, then its speed is very high and can fast read and write.
  • Uses power very rarely.
  • There is not much size and weight is also very less.

Disadvantages Of SSD

  • Much more expensive than HDD.
  • SSD of very high capacity is very less.
  • not easily found in the normal market.

What is HDD?

The full name of HDD is Hard Disk Drive, which is an Electro-magnetic, non-volatile storage device. It consists of moving parts. It has a Spinning Platter that revolves around the spindle. The spinning platter is coated with a layer of magnetic material.

To read/write the data above it is mounted on the head which is at the end of the Actuator arm. Its data process or performance depends on how much is its RPM i.e. Round per minute. HDD has two main components

1. Mechanical components

These components such as Spindle, Magnetic Platter, Actuator, Read / write head, the motor is what we see.

2. Electrical components

All Magnetic hard drives have a Microprocessor. With its Associative Memory is also (auxiliary memory) which Printed circuit board is on.

How HDDs work?

Whenever data has to be written in the system, the electrical current is transferred to the disk surface by the write head and the data is accessed in binary code. When this process is reversed to read the data, that is, the electrical current read head is transferred by the magnetic surface. HDDs are connected to the computer’s motherboard via cables. The codes of binary code 0 and 1 are decoded by the computer.

What is SATA?

SATA means Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. This is an interface that is better and faster than PATA ie Parallel ATA. This is the standard for transferring data to hard drives through which data is transferred from HDD to the computer via SATA.

Whenever we go to buy HDD or build a PC, our attention is only on its storage capacity at the time of taking HDD. But you should know that HDDs come in 6 types and 6 colors depending on the performance and operation.

Their WD (Western digital) color code and description is given below –

WD Blue These drives are for General Consumers and for General Purpose. Those who have to do their own small work. Those who do not have to do heavy work. These are currently available in the market in capacities ranging from 500 GB to 1 TB.

WD Black These drives are better for those who have to do heavy tasks, such as Mixing, Animation, Graphics work, etc. This is the best performance drive for them.

WD Green   This drive comes for Secondary storage. If you take this drive, then its performance is very slow. It is used to store data that is not used frequently. By the way, its specialty is also that the drive of this color does not corrupt quickly.

WD Purple These color drives come for those tasks which have to be performed 24 hours and that too only write in large amounts. Like surveillance is for CCTV cameras etc. They have good writing ability.

WD Red  These drives are for NAS related tasks. NAS means Network-attached storage. If you want to host your own site or customers’ sites by creating your own server, then this HDD is better for you. It is used in hosting companies for things like 24 hours of files, data sharing.

WD Gold These are for the Drives Enterprise-class. In which a lot of data is stored and shares that too in real-time.

Advantages Of HDD

  • HDDs are very cheap
  • HDD of high capacity is very easy to find.
  • you can also purchase from any company.

Disadvantage Of HDD

  • Speed of data read-write low
  • Power uses more
  • After 5-6 years, it starts having problems because it is a mechanical device and moving parts inside it.
  • Size is more and weight is also more

What is SSHD?

SSHD means Solid-state hybrid drive It has components of both SSD and HDD. It looks like an HDD. It also has all the parts of HDD, there is a separate space for SSD. Nowadays, by buying 1TB SSHD in the market, you get 8GB SSD and the rest of HDD performance.

This means that like both SSD and HDD storage devices, it is also a physical storage device. The only difference is that in this one hybrid drive we get the mixed performance of both.

How SSHD works?

An SSHD-installed computer automatically decides which of your data will be stored in which port of the SSHD. Generally, the computer’s OS (operating system), Boot files are all stored in the SSD part.

While the rest of the other files, software, multimedia files, etc. are stored in HDD storage. These decisions are controlled by SSHD. One more thing to note is that any task or app that you use repeatedly or more, it will be automatically saved in SSD.

Advantages of SSHD

  • This is more reliable in use and gives high speed with large space.
  • This doesn’t have more moving parts.
  • SSHD is less expensive compared to SSD and can be used in the long term.

Disadvantage of SSHD

There is a higher chance of getting damaged by the HDD portion of SSHD which is made up of fragile if it dropped.
